Ceramic Coating vs Wax: What Is Worth It In Colorado?

    TBA Spray DetailingSeptember 18, 2026

Ceramic coating and wax do the same basic job. Both put a sacrificial layer between your paint and everything Colorado throws at it. The difference is how long that layer lasts and what it costs. A wax or sealant is a $40 add on that holds for a few months. A ceramic coating starts at $399 and holds for years.

    What wax does well

Wax is cheap, fast and can be added to any detail we are already doing. It brings back gloss, it makes the next wash easier, and it costs $40. For a car that gets detailed every season, or one you plan to sell in the next year, wax is usually the right call. The tradeoff is simple: it wears off. Sun, car washes and winter brine all shorten it, so you are reapplying a few times a year.

What a ceramic coating does differently

A coating bonds to the clear coat instead of sitting on top of it. The surface it leaves is harder and slicker, so brine, bugs and road film release instead of sticking. Washing gets faster because less is holding on. Our ceramic coating starts at $399, takes about three hours, and includes the decontamination that has to happen before any coating goes down.

    The altitude factor

At Front Range elevation the sun is harder on paint than it is at sea level. Oxidation shows up first on horizontal panels, the hood and the roof, where the car takes the most direct light. A coating does not make paint immune to that, but it holds up far longer than a wax that is gone by midsummer.

    What it costs here

Wax or sealant, $40 as an add on to any detail. Ceramic coating, from $399, about three hours with decontamination included. One step paint correction with a ceramic coating, $799. Two step paint correction with a ceramic coating, $1,199. One thing worth knowing before you spend: coating over swirled paint locks the swirls in. If the finish is already marked, correction comes first, which is why those combination prices exist.

    Which one to pick

If you are selling the car within a year or you already book a detail every season, take the wax. If you are keeping the car three years or more, or it is new and the paint is still perfect, the coating pays for itself in wash time and appearance. If the paint is dull or swirled today, start with paint correction and coat it afterward.
